About this course

This course is suitable for adults aged 19+ years that wish to gain a qualification to help them progress in their education and/or career.

Successful completion of the course will lead to a GCSE English Language qualification with Edexcel.

Entry Requirements: Level 1 Functional Skills English or completion of an initial assessment showing you are working at this level or higher.

This course will be delivered over 29 weeks and the final exams will take place on two dates in May and June 2026 at our learning centre in Sutton In Ashfield.

This course will allow you to draw upon a range of texts as reading stimulus and engage with creative as well as real and relevant contexts. You will have opportunities to develop higher-order reading and critical thinking skills that encourage genuine enquiry into different topics and themes. The course will teach you to be able to demonstrate a confident control of Standard English and write grammatically correct sentences, deploying figurative language and analysing texts. The texts used on this course include literature and extended literary non-fiction, and other writing such as essays, reviews and journalism (both printed and online).

Your application will be checked to confirm you qualify for a funded place on the course and do not already hold an English GCSE at grade C / Level 4. You will then be asked to complete an online English initial assessment, and we will contact you to discuss the outcome of this. You will be offered a place on the course if you are working at Level 1 or higher. If the outcome of this shows that you are not yet working at Level 1 or above, it will be recommended that you complete an English Functional Skills course first.

As this course is delivered online, a suitable device such as laptop, tablet or computer will be required to access the course. The link for you to join the live sessions will be sent to you once your enrolment has been completed.
